Dorothy “Dot” Mason of the George Mason Fund. The fund, administered by Hawai‘i Community Foundation, backs everything from PBS Hawai‘i’s HIKI N? learning initiative and the youth program at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children, and Navian Hawai‘i’s pediatric hospice care and was established to honor the memory of her late husband. “He wanted to be sure that the money was being used to help people who needed it,” says Mason, adding that George was a longtime supporter of M?noa Valley Theatre, having served on its board of directors for a number of years. “I tried to maintain his standard."

                              Dr. Mark Mugiishi

As president and CEO of Hawai‘i Medical Service Association, many would be surprised to hear of Dr. Mugiishi’s passion for the arts. It was this love that led him to the role of producer of Allegiance. Set in the time period of Japanese American internment during World War II, the musical starred George Takei and Lea Salonga, opening in San Diego before running on Broadway for several months back in 2015-16. The production was aided primarily by a “Hawai‘i hui” of investors who believed in the message of a story so important for so many. Dr. Mugiishi was also heavily involved in 2019, when M?noa Valley Theatre premiered it at the Hawai‘i Theatre bringing the momentous work to local audiences.
